Have you ever been to a place for the first time, and remembered it from a dream? Or felt the call of rotting carpets & dusty calliopes from a place you’ve never been?

There is a word in Sanskrit, “rasa”. It means the flavor of an experience, or how art, music, or experience the beauty of nature can invoke a third experience: there is the perceiver, the perceived, and the relationship of perceiving.

No Horses On The Carousel is a photo essay from 2 days spent at House on the Rock, in Spring Green, WI, as part of ongoing documentation & study of this strange and mysterious place, in an attempt to share the rasa & communicate that through my work. They are on display for the month of July, 2026 at Ugly Duck Coffee, while I am in Wisconsin at the House, exploring & photographing more.

These photos are an attempt to understand the history, reality and future of a place that is beyond description, and leaves visitors with more questions than answers. This virtual space will serve as the repository of my ongoing documentation of House on the Rock.

Relatively unknown outside of the midwest and “Strange America” curiosity seekers, this roadside attraction promises “an experience that will entertain, astound & amaze!” according to the brochures you can pick up at gas stations & AAA kiosks. The House on the Rock was built in the 1940’s by an amateur architect on top of a 60 foot sandstone formation in rural Wisconsin. As interest in the strange project grew, so did Alex Jordan Jr.’s collection of dollhouses, ephemera, calliope machines, and oddities. Today the House is almost completely the way Alex left it when he died in 1989, and continues to send out a strange siren call to any and all who follow it to spend hours exploring his vision.

I will be giving an artist’s talk & sharing more photos & videos from my time spent in Alex Jordan Jr’s House on the Rock on July 31st, 2026 at Ugly Duck Coffee. I hope to see you there, and most of all, I hope you get to experience the rasa of House on the Rock someday.

Framed prints (currently up at UDC) $69 - email to purchase, you just have to do your best to describe which photo you want, I’m sorry I do not make the rules I just listen to what the House tells me to do.
